Over Christmas I have acquired my very own copy of Imperial Armour 13, and have been glued to it at every chance I get. So why not share the fun with some reviews of this book and what my first impressions are and then we can dive into taking it apart in chunks take a good bite! Let us begin!
So this book will set you back £45 on purchase (not including P&P) and lots of people would say "There isn't much point in getting it" or "You won't be able to use it in normal games". We can go on, however, now in 7th edition with Lords of War, D weapons and giant creatures running round and being allowed in standard game play perhaps IA is the way we should all go.
First off, what is in this book? Well first off it has it's own individual Codex that is legal within 40K. Codex: The Lost and The Damned. This Codex is basically Chaos Astra Militarum with a few units added (Chaosy like) and a few taken away (Manticore, Valkyrie, Hydra). The Units all come at BS2, yet every squad or tank can pay a 10pts tax to bring it back up to BS3, to be honest that is not bad. Okay we also don't get things like orders, but we do make up for it with being cheaper than our counterpart.
This codex is also classed as "Battle Brothers" for a Chaos Space Marine force, meaning we once again can bring a Guard army to the fold without having the "Desperation" rules that normal Guard do. Goodie!
What else? Lords of War! Within this book there are several Lords of War, each built for there own game. There are Chaos Lords of War: Greater Brass Scorpion, Typhon, Fellblade etc. It also has some Lost and the Damned Lords of War: Malcador, Baneblades, Minotaur etc. Finally it has Titans and Daemon Lords, which are for the big old apocalypse games that you could be getting yourself into.
Any More? Well, Yes. Finally, we have Ferrum Infernus Class Dreadnaughts, Infernal Relics, Drop Claws and many many more vehicles to battle for you in every day in standard 40K games. Some even can take the sides of Chaos Daemons, or are strictly for Chaos Daemons only.
Lets not forget, this is Games Workshop products here, so there are mountains of pretty pictures and very nice story writing and entries about the vehicles. To give you a nice little taster, lets review a New Unit!
Behold: Ferrum Infernus Chaos Dreadnaught
To start out, I am not going to let you know every single stat and weapon upgrade and effect that these units have access to, as I am not sponsored in anyway by GW, I would rather not get into trouble, so here we go.
The Ferrum Infernus comes in at 35 points more expensive than your standard Codex Helbrute with +1 WS and BS, it is also tagged with the Infernal Relic special rule, I will talk about that in a different post, and this thing doesn't have the Crazed rule. Huzzah!
Furthermore the upgrades on this guy are your standard weapon sets for dreadnaughts, the only difference is this guy can also get Malefic Ammunition (Rending), for a heavy points cost. So what is so amazing about this thing? Well it is in these 3 upgrades: Lord of the Long War, Host of Daemonic Iron and Destroyer of Cities. These give you a very nice bunch of extra goodies enemy dreadnaughts would be jealous of!
Lord of the Long War allows your dreadnaught to transform upon death (Explodes only). After rolling a D3, the Ferrum is instantly transformed into either a Spawn or a Daemon Prince, there is also a chance to get the explode result to be re-rolled so your Infernus can live a little longer. How nice is that? A dreadnaught that gives you a Daemon Prince at death? I would happily get three of these and wish them into an explosion just so they can appear.
Host of Daemonic Armour is my least favorite of the three, giving Daemonic Resilience and an auto hit in combat after losing hull points, now this can be helpful in situations, but doesn't give your dread much to run with by itself and I don't see this guy being mopped up in combat much with this upgrade, more a gun post. Never mind, Onwards!
Finally, Destroyer of Cities gives your dread a +1 front armour value, a flamestorm cannon (We get them now) an assault drill and move through cover. Very nice! This load out gives your dreadnaught the gear it needs to get up close and personal with the enemy, a S6 AP3 Template up close and personal can swamp out them pesky scoring units and a big arse hammer to smash any of them bunkers or large tanks that might be sitting round too. Perhaps with a dread claw to get it in there nice and early? Yes, we have them too!
Does this want you to get a couple? I have been honestly looking in to it, and let's face it. It is better than the Boons table!
Iron Warrior Out!
